Harry Potter Moment of The Week

Harry Potter Moment of the Week – Thoughts on Casting!

It’s time for another Harry Potter Moment of the Week! (Lowdown: Awesome Potter-themed meme hosted by Uncorked Thoughts!) While I shared my Hufflepuff Pride last week, this one is all about the film cast.

How do you feel about the HP film cast? Any that don’t fit with the image you had?”

Actually I think they’re all spot on. I mean, those films have been going on so long that it’s hard to distinguish what I’ve been given from what I originally imagined pre-film. There are no characters that I think don’t fit, in my opinion they’re all perfectly suited to their roles.

(Some casting director somewhere deserves all the promotions!)

I will point out something that’s always slightly niggled on me though, Hermione’s hair.

(Oh lord, here we go. Switch off now if you don’t want nitpicky nonsense!)

Don’t get me wrong, I bloody love Hermione. I think Emma Watson is a stunning, all round amazing person. I just wish her hair was frizzier. Throughout each book it’s stated how strongly bushy and frizzy her hair is, and I think that it’s only really recreated in the first film:

By the time the second one rolls around, the appropriately bushy hair is replaced with something far more resembling styled and curled than frizzy…

By the time the fourth film happens (yes, it annoys me that there’s hardly any difference between her hair for the Yule Ball and normally, as it’s supposed to be a jaw dropping change, not look like she’s just pinned it!), there’s hardly any semblance of bushy or frizzy, which is awesome for Emma Watson, but annoying in terms of continuity and character depiction.

It’s like making Ron anything other than redheaded!

Rant over. I love the cast! (Really, I do!)

  1. Ah, I knew someone would pick this! And no buckteeth, right? In the end, it’s just semantics, because the acting was great and the story was put across just fine.

Madame Maxime could have been cast better, now that I come to think of it.

    1. Exactly, it is just semantics. The films are so good and true that most complaints are complete nitpicking haha, I did love her in the role and I think she was a perfect Hermione!
Ahh, yes, I agree on Madame Maxime, although I was never really bothered about her casting, I don’t think I was particularly invested in her as a character so she stayed off my radar.

  2. I did notice the difference in Hermione’s hair from the first film to the second, but the acting was so great, I pretty much forgot about the hair. I saw the first film before reading the books, and from that point on, I couldn’t picture anyone else but Emma Watson as Hermione. 🙂
